Dental Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that covers the entire surface of your tooth above the gumline. They’re also called caps because they effectively cap off your tooth.

Dental crowns are designed from an impression of your smile, so they’re custom-built to fit perfectly in your smile and blend in seamlessly.

Many crown materials can also be shade-matched with the rest of your teeth, so your dental crown can restore your tooth without compromising the aesthetic integrity of the rest of your smile.

What purpose does a dental crown serve?

A crown reinforces your tooth when a filling or another restoration won’t suffice. A dental crown is commonly used to treat a tooth with:

  • A fracture or break
  • Extensive decay
  • Too many large fillings
  • Fractured fillings

Dr. Boado also usually fits your tooth with a crown if you’ve had a root canal. This provides your treated tooth with extra protection and restores its strength and structure.

Dental crowns also have cosmetic functions. If you have a tooth that’s discolored, misshapen, or otherwise unsightly, a dental crown can replace the cap to make it look like a beautiful, new, and flawless tooth.

What are crowns made from?

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, like silver amalgam or cast gold. Hollister Smiles Dental: Diana Boado, DDS, also offers porcelain crowns and Empress® restorations.

Empress crowns use biocompatible materials that are known for being remarkably strong and durable. Both Empress crowns and porcelain crowns can also be matched to the color of your tooth enamel and have a color and translucency that make them look just like a natural tooth in your smile.

What happens when I get a dental crown?

Getting a dental crown typically requires two appointments.

During your first appointment, Dr. Boado prepares your tooth by shaving down some of its enamel and takes impressions of your mouth that a dental laboratory uses to fabricate your crown. During your second appointment, Dr. Boado permanently seals your crown to your tooth.

In between the two appointments, you wear a temporary crown to keep your tooth protected while you wait for your permanent restoration to come back from the lab, which usually takes about two weeks.
